Winter Break means vacation . . . rest and relaxation, right? But does that mean our students’ minds should go totally blank? Shouldn’t they still do a little work to keep the mind warmed up?
I used to send home books and worksheets for students over Winter Break so that they could practice. 10 years ago it was more effective. Now? It’s more of a headache from me to get together and try to get back! That’s why this year I am sending home these bookmarks. For every student that reads 5 books, records those books, and gets a parent or caretaker to sign off on the bookmark before returning it to me at the end of Winter Break, I will reward that student handsomely! (Ok . . . so maybe not quite so handsomely, but to a 1st grader an ice cream or a treat somewhere up that alley is usually quite handsome!)
