As lower primary grade teachers, it’s a pure delight to see our little guys pumped up with pride at mastering something new. “I know my ABCs!” is a perfect example of that.
Sometimes, however, parents may also see the ability to sing the ABC Song as “knowing” the alphabet, when we know that so much more is involved! Here’s a parent handout that lists some of the many ways to “know” the alphabet: letter names, letter sounds, uppercase/lowercase match, sequence of letters, etc.
This makes a great handout at parent conferences! You may also consider using it as a reference when writing student progress reports.
