So that I could get a handle on where my new students were, I always liked to do a bit of assessing that first week of school. This can be a bit overwhelming for little ones, and time-consuming for me, so I designed this interesting and fun alphabet “craftivity”.
This wacky bird’s name is Alfie. One leg is made up of uppercase letters, the other has lowercase letters on it. Students choose from a variety of colored pattern pieces and glue their bird together. (All the templates are in the packet.) Alfie’s body is simply a folded paper plate.
When everyone has completed their bird, play “I Spy” by calling out a letter. Students find and trace it, then raise their hand. You can tell at a glance who is struggling. Call on a child to choose the next letter, and play ’til all of them have been traced.
