It’s hard to believe, but Summer really is over. Many school districts are back to school already, while others go back this week.
Most of the kids I work with are only emergent writers, so the ubiquitous “What I did…” essay isn’t in their skill set quite yet. But with my “My Summer Journal” free sample, they can tell me about what they did over the summer with their limited vocabulary, using the visual cues to help them remember the important information to provide.
If they need a scribe or alternative pencil, we use that.
The visual cues provide reminders to write Who, What, When, Where, and How I felt. Use photos if they have them, then have them write a word or two answering the specific Wh-question.
