Today is the last day of school for my students just north of Seattle. As I send them on to the next grade I hope they do more over the summer than endless hours of screen time.
The Basic Operations Checklist shown above is one that I use this year to keep students and parents informed about progress in math. One of our longest units was basic operations of fractions and decimals. I gave my students a pretest for the unit and we analyzed what areas they needed the most work. I pulled students in small groups according to need.
When I give students a pretest for a unit, they are allowed to write “I don’t know this, yet.” I want them to know that I believe they will learn the concepts. It just takes a little for time for some students.
