There are so many ways to practice counting and reading number words. One of my favorites is using the book “Ten Apples Up On Top” and this free number practice counting activity.
The book is perfect for beginning readers to practice rhyming and reading number words. As you read, have them listen for the number words. Try having them hold up the correct number of fingers as you read each number (you may have to read slowly in some parts). You could also use some manipulatives such as mini erasers or counters for them to show the number of apples on their desk as you read.
After we read, we use dot markers to dab the matching number of “apples” on top of the animals’ heads. We chose to use red, yellow, and green, since those are the colors that apples can be.
The free download comes with two different versions so you can differentiate as needed. The first version has the numbers (1-10) under each animal, and the second version uses number words so students can practice reading the words and then counting to add the appropriate number of apples on top of each animal.
