A person’s self worth is linked to self confidence. Positive self esteem or self worth requires good self confidence. Goal setting and reflection are important for developing good self confidence.
What is goal setting?
Goal setting is choosing things to do or attain during a certain time frame along with a plan to make it happen. For example: This year I will improve my reading skills by reading daily at school and at home. The goal is to improve reading skills and the plan is to read daily at school and at home.
What comes after goal setting?
The next step is to begin the plan. A person will begin to feel more self confident if there is progress. If progress isn’t evident, self confidence can weaken and so can self esteem. It is important to reflect regularly.
Why is reflection important for developing self confidence?
Success breeds success, and lack of success can cause lower self esteem or self confidence. Reflection is important because it allows for adjusting goals or plans if they are not working well or if they have already been achieved. Reflections focus both on successes and areas needing improvement. Most people are self critical. They focus on the faults and areas that aren’t working instead of the things that have worked. This can create lower self confidence and fears that can interfere with progress.
I struggle with reflections even today. It is easy to say “focus on the successes” but sometimes it is difficult to see them. Often, it takes others to help point out some of the successes too. With practice, everyone can learn to find some things that are working. The sooner children can be taught this, the sooner they will be confident learners.
As a child, I was always fearful of trying something new. I was sure that I would fail. It took encouragement and praise from others to help me overcome this fear. Over the years, I gained some self confidence and I started to take more risks. Each time I succeeded I felt empowered to try something new and I grew more confident. Now, I realize that I am capable of doing many things because of the encouragement and reflection over the years.
I have created this template for goal setting and reflection. It has two versions, the first is good for starting a new school year, and the second is for starting a new calendar year. Successes are the 3 stars and the wish is a new goal. Click the image to get your copy.
