Using Arthur’s Halloween freebies makes Halloween so much more fun in the classroom! Written by Marc Brown, this picture book is one of my very favorite Fall read alouds.
What a character! Arthur is always getting into some sticky situation and then goes through a series of changes before making everything ok again.

Teaching Arthur’s Halloween
I feel like I can teach just about any reading comprehension strategy or skill with Arthur’s Halloween. There are so many ways you can teach reading with this engaging text, I will typically use it for two or three weeks in October. Students never get tired of this book and are always begging to keep going. Teaching comprehension, fluency, phonics / spelling patterns, and writing just naturally flow with this Halloween favorite!
Arthur’s Halloween is just perfect for teaching…
- making connections
- story elements
- characterization
- metacognition
- sequencing
- fact & opinion
- main idea
- cause & effect
- spelling patterns
- opinion writing
… just about any literacy skill or reading strategy you want to teach with a fiction book.
Putting a smile on my students’ faces and encouraging them to dig deep into the text is so easy to do with this book! My students have always found it easy to connect to Arthur and his friends.
