Growth Mindset Activities – Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

6-8· All Freebies

Do your middle school students need a boost after the winter break?

Have you been wanting to teach a growth mindset but are unsure where to start?

Start here with our collection of unique growth mindset activities that can be used as bell ringers, warmups or individual exercises for your early finishers.  It’s the perfect way to find that growth mindset inspiration this winter — all with Common Core alignment, fun puzzles, and best of all, lovely prizes!

This collection is a “deep dive” into a quote from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The idea behind this collection is that repetition of these quotes in different forms will help students memorize the quote AND understand the concepts at a deep level — it’s sneaky repetition!

How Do You Use These Growth Mindset Activities for kids?

It’s easy! Everything is ready to print and go! There are four separate growth mindset activities included. Here’s the quote your kids will work with:

If you can’t fly then run, if you can’t run then walk, if you can’t walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward.

We’ve Included a Ton of Stuff in this Growth Mindset Activity for Kids:

Growth Mindset Puzzle

The words have been scrambled, and your students will be challenged to solve the puzzle by arranging the words into the correct order, reconstructing the quote.

If you want to use it in teams, you can project it on a whiteboard so a group or the entire class can work on it together. You also get an answer key. This puzzle is similar to our Thanksgiving quote activity.

Reflect and Write Activity

This activity includes the unscrambled quote, a biographical statement that helps the student understand the life path of Dr. King, and questions to help the students relate the quote to their own lives (meets Common Core standards W.6.1, W.6.2, W.6.3, W.7.1, W.7.2, W.7.3, W.8.1, W.8.2, W.8.3);

Coloring Poster

Your kids can color a lovely poster that contains the quote, exposing them to the quote in a different way. Teachers can hang it up or the student can take it with them — it’s 8.5 x 11″ so it will slip into a notebook perfectly.

Origami Bookmark

And finally, there’s the lovely prize: an origami bookmark that has the quote printed right on it. Simple to fold, and another “prize” your kids can keep and use.

Bonus Poster

We include a bonus poster you can print for your bulletin board. It’s US letter size, and prints just fine in black and white as well as color.

We hope you enjoy this freebie on the growth mindset! It is with a warm heart that we offer it to you and your students this winter season.
