Children have fun with compound words when they are used in a game format. Games help them learn concepts. They provide the “fun” component that engages children so that they will participate longer and the more they use a concept, the more likely they are to learn it.
Ways to have fun with compound words
There are several ways to have fun with compound words. I like to use games. Games are very effective and fun also. Writing activities are another fun way to use them.
Task cards are great for partner games or small center activities. Memory match games add suspense. Scoot games allow for movement around the room and recording responses.
The words on the cards can be story starters.
Combining themes with concepts
Themes make concepts more timely and interesting. The same concepts can be practiced many times by changing the theme used. For example: Here are some compound word concepts with a winter theme. Change the theme to another season and select compound words for that season and play the games and activities again.
I created a set of winter themed task cards to practice making compound words. Click on the image below to check them out and get your free copy.
