Getting ESL students using correct grammar when they speak or write is a challenge. That is why you need to get your ELLs using the grammar as much as possible, saying not 1 or 2 sentences a class, but 20, 30, even 40 sentences a class. They need to say the sentences so much that they say them without thinking. That is how we learn a language natively: by practicing speaking a lot.
After students have gotten better at speaking the grammar correctly, they can turn that experience into writing. It is much easier for students to focus on good writing once they have mastered the speaking.
In this popular free resource, you can get your English language learners speaking and writing with better grammar. The pages included start by getting students speaking first. Afterward, you can follow up with writing practice connected to the speaking practice.
