free spelling word games, spelling center ideas,
Do your students needs a new spelling game easy to do any time of year?
I love having Spelling battleship copied and on hand for just that occasion!

Taking a game and putting a twist on it for learning is a great way to get students engaged.
Spelling practice has not always been a favorite but such a necessary skill for building the foundation of words. This twist excited students in the skill and I love that it can be used over and over all year long!
My Faves:
FREE Spelling Word Game
Spelling battleship has always been a class favorite.
The premise is the same as the original.
Students place their words on the board intersecting letters if they choose. They take turns firing off combinations until words/”ships” are sunk.
If using a large list, the pair can agree on the same words to put on the board.
*TIP* laminate boards and use dry erase markers to keep this as a FREE spelling center option all year long for your students.
Uses for Spelling Center or Games
Some of my favorite ways to use Spelling Battleship or any spelling game or center are:
- Sub Plans – easy great review for any time of year!
- Filler/Transition Time – great to break out and use with students!
- Tied to Math – using coordinates is important (or it will be if you teach younger grades so tying these concepts together is a great cross curricular connection.
- Independent work – for Daily 5 time or guided reading this was an easy way for students to work that took no monitoring from me.
