Measurement Activity: Are You A Rectangle Or A Square?

3-5· All Freebies· PK-2

Here is a great little measurement activity that combines both math and science. Children love being able to use measuring tapes and work with partners.

This measurement activity uses the scientific process as well for discovering whether one is a rectangle or a square. #mathactivity #measurementactivity #scientifcprocess

What are you trying to find out?

In this activity, the goal is to find out if your arm span is the same as your height. If it is, you are a square. If it isn’t, you are a rectangle.

Measuring arm span is part of the experiment.

String is used to measure from finger tip to finger tip. Then the string is measured using a measuring tape.

Measuring height is part of the experiment

Height is measured up against a wall using a measuring tape.

Both arm width and height can be measured in cm or inches.

What did you learn in this measurement activity?

Included in the resource are pages for recording hypothesis, observations, and results.

Did you discover you were a rectangle, or a square?
