The May Amelia books by Jennifer L. Holm are popular with my colleagues who teach Washington State history to fourth graders. Set in southwest Washington in about 1900, I use it to teach about settlements just after statehood.
To go along with this book and other historical fiction books, I created a graphic organizer where students compare daily tasks from the past and present and imagine what those tasks will be like in the future.
