Every year I sit down and I try to list out all of the things I need to make sure that I tell my students about. I try to make sure I cover all the procedures and assume nothing. I recall a time that I just assumed that they knew how to sharpen a pencil or knew how to treat others. Those days are looooooooong gone.
It’s funny how the longer we teach, the more we realize that if you leave any wiggle room, a student will wiggle right through it– and then some.
Since there are absolutely no assumptions in teaching, I had to make sure I listed everything I wanted to my students to know in my classroom. That’s where this procedures list came in.
How the Procedures List Helps Your Classroom Management
One of my hidden talents is classroom management. I always manage to have a smooth running classroom and I believe it is because I always teach over and over at the beginning of the year my procedures.
I go over and over with my students each and ever procedure AND we practice them until they are routine.
That’s where this procedure list comes in handy. It can help you determine what procedures in your classroom are important so that you don’t miss one. There’s nothing worse that trying to explain to students later on down the road how to do something (or correct them again and again) instead of teaching.
