Number bonds are very useful for seeing the connections in math.

What are number bonds?
Number bonds are groups of objects containing numbers that go together. They usually have a large object connected to two smaller objects. They are a visual representation for math facts.
How are number bonds used?
The concept of a family is helpful when thinking about math facts and number bonds. The head of the family is the first object and it is the largest object. The two smaller objects are the other family members.

The head of the family is always the last number in an addition sentence. The two other member numbers join together to equal the number of the head of the family.
7 + 5 = 12
5 + 7 = 12
For subtraction, the head of the family is always the first number. When one of the family member numbers is taken away, the other member number remains.
12 – 5 = 7
12 – 7 = 5

The head of the family is always the last number in a multiplication sentence. The two other member numbers join together to equal the number of the head of the family.
5 x 7 = 35
7x 5 = 35
For division, the head of the family is always the first number. When it is divided by one of the member numbers, the other member number remains.
35 ÷ 5 = 7
35 ÷ 7 = 5
