Vocabulary Learning That’s Fun

3-5· PK-2

Vocabulary knowledge is a major factor in students’ development of reading comprehension. Here is a free YouTube channel that makes the learning of vocabulary fun.

It is the Word of the Day for Kids channel. You can follow the playlists for each month or pick and choose the words you want to show your students. The words are all Tier 2 vocabulary. In each video, the word and written definition are shown and spoken. Then segments from popular kid-friendly movies, shows, news reports, or documentaries provide samples of the word’s usage in a clear, complete, vivid context. This provides a multi-sensory presentation which is far superior for learning to just text or audio.

Here are a few samples. Just click on the word to see the video.

  • comeuppance
  • transform
  • inadvertently

Give it a try and you will see “A picture is better than 1000 words.” To go to the Word of the Day for Kids channel just click here.
