Free Handout – Journaling For Kids

6-8· All Freebies

Hello, fellow teachers and creative educators!
I’m so excited you’re here, because today I’m sharing a fun and meaningful way to help our students reflect, grow, and express themselves — through journaling for kids. Whether you’re looking to build classroom community, encourage emotional literacy, or just add a calming moment of routine to your day, this free printable handout from CreativeBrainsGrowHere.org is designed to make that easy, engaging, and kid-friendly.

Journaling can be a fun and therapeutic activity for kids, supporting their emotional, mental, and academic growth. It also allows us (journaling is a great skill for all ages) to chronicle events and gives us that hindsight we all need to move forward.

Journaling helps kids often discover their preferences, interests, and values, leading to a stronger sense of identity. When we write out our thoughts we often surprise ourselves! https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Why-Make-A-Journal-Fun-Handout-for-All-Ages-11944298

Emotional Expression

Writing for oneself allows us to safely plot out our feelings, and it can help us work through joy, frustration, anger, or anxiety at any age.

Reflection / Understanding

It encourages self-reflection, helping kids think about their experiences, actions, and lessons from them.

Improved Writing Skills

Regular writing practice enhances kids’ writing abilities, vocabulary, and communication skills.

Creativity Booster

Journals can be a canvas for self-exploration, providing a safe environment for storytelling, drawing, and expressing imaginative ideas.

Focus Food

Sitting down to a journal can help kids practice focus and concentration and develop good habits for other academic tasks.

Goal Setting

Journaling can help kids set, track, and achieve personal goals, building motivation.

Memory Improvement

Writing helps enhance memory and comprehension because writing something down can reinforce learning. This is a big reason I love nature journals- once you look up what trees and flowers you are drawing, you’ll remember it next time 🙂

Better Understanding of Themselves

Journaling helps kids often discover their preferences, interests, and values, leading to a stronger sense of identity. When we write out our thoughts we often surprise ourselves!

Problem-Solving Skills

It encourages kids to think critically about challenges and brainstorm potential solutions. To wonder on paper about potential outcomes will strengthen the ability to see challenges as areas to brainstorm instead of viewing them as blockages.

Encouraging kids to keep journals can be a fun and rewarding way to develop essential life skills while enjoying the therapeutic benefits of writing. Dream journals, nature journals, and “about me” Q&A journals are all helpful for building skills needed in the real world.
