A Simple & Sweet Strawberry Moon Activity for Kids (FREE Printable!)

3-5· 6-8

Hi! Were your kids inspired by the Artemis II moon mission? I know I was! I’ve been busy creating activities around space and the full moons!

Artemis II was a crewed lunar flyby mission on April 1–11, 2026. It was the first crewed flight of the NASA-led Artemis program and the first crewed flight beyond low Earth orbit since Apollo 17 in 1972. Artemis II was the second flight of the Space Launch System (SLS) and the first crewed flight of the Orion spacecraft, named Integrity by the four-person crew. - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Artemis_II

If you’re looking for an easy, low-prep activity to wrap up the school year or kick off summer learning, this one is such a fun little win 🌙

June brings us the Strawberry Moon, and it’s the perfect opportunity to sneak in a little science, nature, and creativity—without adding extra prep to your day.

What is the Strawberry Moon?

The Strawberry Moon is the name for June’s full moon. It doesn’t actually turn pink—but it does mark the time of year when strawberries are ready to harvest 🍓

The name comes from Native American traditions that used the moon to track seasonal changes and food cycles.

✏️ A Simple Activity Kids LOVE

This free printable turns moon-watching into something meaningful (and fun!).

Here’s what kids do:

  • Head outside at dusk and look for the moon
  • Observe what they notice (color, size, sky conditions)
  • Draw what they see
  • Reflect on what’s happening in nature

It’s one of those activities that feels calm and engaging—perfect for:

  • end-of-year classroom days
  • summer camp quiet time
  • homeschool nature studies
  • or even a simple family night activity

And the best part? It’s completely no-prep 🙌

🌿 Why This Works So Well

Activities like this are powerful because they’re simple—but meaningful.

They help kids:

  • build observation skills
  • practice descriptive writing
  • connect learning to real-world experiences
  • slow down and actually notice nature

Even better—it naturally blends science + ELA + SEL without feeling forced.

☀️ Easy Ways to Extend the Activity

Want to stretch this into a full lesson or themed day? Try adding:

  • 🍓 A writing prompt: “If I could visit the moon…”
  • 🌼 A nature walk to look for signs of early summer
  • 🎨 Moon art with chalk or watercolor
  • 📓 A mini nature journal to track the moon over a few nights

These small add-ons turn a one-page printable into a full experience.

🌙 Make It a Monthly Routine

One of my favorite things about moon activities is how easy they are to repeat.

Each month has a new full moon with its own seasonal meaning—like the Flower Moon in May or the Buck Moon in July—so you can build a simple year-round nature journaling routine with your kids.

💬 Let’s Share Ideas!

If you try this activity, I’d love to hear how you use it!
Do your students draw what they see? Turn it into a writing piece? Use it during camp?

Let me know—we all love finding new ways to keep things simple and meaningful 💛
