When kids are introduced to new words, they need to learn more than definitions. Symbolic representations and using new words in sentences are important, too. Each week my students created a Vocabulary Foldable with five new words they were learning. Below you can see the teacher directions as well as an example of a completed foldable. The words and illustrations were written on the outside of each flap, and the sentences and definitions were added to the inside.
You can download the directions and a blank template from the Balanced Literacy page on Teaching Resources. You’ll also find loads more free literacy center ideas on that page as well!
