Here is a freebie that can be used in science classes of all grade levels.

This is a PowerPoint on the characteristics of life. It is 11 slides that are bright, colorful, and contain some pretty cool pictures. The PowerPoint describes the 10 characteristics of all living things.  To be considered a living organism, each of these characteristics must be present in the organism.  Use this in grades 4 and higher as an introduction to any life science unit. I use this at the beginning of the school year and it makes for a great first day of school attention grabber.  I also show this to my students again just before teaching a unit on the viruses.  It helps my students to understand why the viruses are not considered to be living organisms.
