When I taught first grade, I always started every year talking about how much we would learn together in class and I mention a story about brain wrinkles that a second grade teacher used to tell her students. She said that every time we learn something new we get a new wrinkle in our brains so by the end of our school year our brains would be as wrinkly as an elephant’s skin. That always stuck with me. To help students visualize their brain wrinkles, I have them draw on a “brain” how many wrinkles they think they will get in our year together. I put this sheet in their portfolio that they received back at the end of the year. It’s a great little keepsake. It might be fun to do this mid year as well and compare how many wrinkles they thought they would get at the beginnig of the year and how many they think they have now. Maybe they will draw a million! LOL
