Phoneme segmentation is difficult to teach when students just aren’t getting it. The problem is that it’s so abstract to children and unless you can really get it to click for them, they’ll continue to struggle. As a reading teacher, I’ve definitely been able to identify my students who are low in phonemic awareness and how it adversely affects them. Over on my blog I have a few different ideas for boosting phoneme segmentation skills including a few freebies. I believe students need to use gross and fine motor movements to really begin to grasp this skill. These two freebies have students adding pieces as they say each sound.
