Are you looking for a new title of an American Native legend to add to your classroom library?
The Legend of Hobbomock, The Sleeping Giant, is a Native American legend that is very near and dear my heart. I grew up only two miles from this great Connecticut mountain that appears to be a giant lying on his back, taking a snooze.
The Quinnipiac Native Americans lived in the forested area around the mountain during pre-Colonial days and it was from their stories that the legend was passed from one generation to the next. When I discovered that Jason Marchi, a local resident and an award winning author, poet and journalist had written the legend and Jesse Bonelli, also an award winning local artist, had created the magnificent paintings for the picture book, I was ecstatic!
See much more information about Blackbird, the young boy who has to save his People from Hobbomock’s wrath when Hobbomock learns that the People aren’t respecting the Earth. This book is for ages 6-10 as well as older readers. It’s also an excellent read aloud. A free download is available with a description of other free products that I’ll be posting for this “must add to my classroom library” Native American Legend. This book was selected for “Booking Across the USA” to represent the state of Connecticut. You’ll see it in my “Booking Across the USA” posting.
UPDATE April, 2013: The book is now available on CD along with an audio recording of it and an 87 page fun activity packet for students. The CD was designed with the audio version to provide a way for visually challenged or non readers to be able to experience the legend. The audio recording artist is an NPR radio host as well as an opera star who sings with symphonies around the world. There is also a PDF of the entire book on the CD.
