Kids need to make connections as they read. They LOVE writing about themselves, so connecting with Text to Self is usually easy. A boy makes the winning point in a basketball game, in a story you’re reading aloud to your class, and you can bet that one of your students will jump out of his seat shouting, “I did that! I did that!”
The other connections are a little more challenging, so it’s important to give examples of them. Connections to the world, can be modified to connecting a problem in their town, with something in a book they’re reading. Small groups are perfect for connection brainstorming. It makes them THINK about what they’re reading and what books they’ve already read.
