The bead slide is absolutely my all time favorite tool for teaching the skill of phoneme segmentation. It’s a great activity for your small group intervention. Simply provide each student with a bead slide and then provide a word. Students slide a bead for each sound heard in the word. For more details on how to make and use the bead slide, just hop on over to the Bead Slide: A Tool for Teaching Phoneme Segmentation blog post on the Make, Take & Teach blog. It’s sometimes difficult to think of 2-, 3- and 4- phoneme words off the top my head so I made this little cheat sheet. You can also download the free cheat sheet too!
