I believe that you build students’ understanding of what place value is by doing expanded form activities.  A while back, I created a Read/Write the Room activity practicing numbers to the hundreds place in standard, expanded, and word forms.  I like doing read/write the rooms because it gets students up and moving and helps keep them engaged and interested in what they’re learning.  To come get it for yourself, just click on either one of the images below.
