Math is best learned through real life skills like cooking. This recipe project was created for the winter holidays, but could work just as well for spring holidays. Growing up in my house, we made deviled eggs at Easter and ham and cabbage for St. Patty’s day. Special recipes are a part of all of our holidays. In this project, students collect a math recipe from their families and use the recipe to plan out the ingredients needed, the budget they will need and the time it will take them to create the recipe. Students are working on a wide range of skills in this project, including elapsed time, working with money and estimation.
