My students have been comparing numbers to 120 in the classroom. They will continue to compare numbers, and I will now be introducing the greater than and less than signs to them.
I introduce the signs by showing the children a picture of an alligator opening his mouth towards a greater amount. It becomes a great visual for students until they become more familiar with using the greater than (>) and less than (<) signs. I’ve found that the picture has been a useful tool when students first learn to use symbols to compare numbers and values.
I’ve created some Greater Than and Less Than Posters that can be used for the purpose of introducing young children to the concept.
