How I Teach Beginning Public Speaking

All Freebies

Speaking in front of an audience can be difficult for children as well as adults.  I have a few tips for teaching this important skill to upper elementary students.

First of all, I give many opportunities for speaking to the class.  Many are informal in class meetings, discussions, or sharing at the end of the day.  I also attach a speaking component to many class assignments.

Second, I implement the buddy system.  The student giving the presentation, may choose someone to stand with them and hold any posters or props.  Students love helping each other in this way and it makes the process less intimidating for the speaker.
