What do augmentative-alternative communication (AAC) users need most of all? A robust communication system.
AAC users need sufficient vocabulary to talk about whatever they want, whenever they want, and to whomever they want.
All too often I find teams restrict the amount of vocabulary available to a student based on perceived developmental or functional level, rather than presuming a greater competence.
Where do we start with our aac instruction?
Core vocabulary has been shown to be the words that speakers use the most often. These are words with multiple function or meaning; words that can be used and re-used often in a variety of combinations to construct a variety of novel messages.
Enjoy this free communication board to use at all times, to build up a student’s proficiency in using core vocabulary. It first appeared as a freebie on my blog at http://kidzlearnlanguage.blogspot.com/2014/09/lets-all-communicate-teaching-core.html
