Writing in the Science Classroom

My students love this activity, and even request it throughout the year!  Students will build a unique and unusual structure using whatever types of building materials you have.   You might use legos, Tinker Toys, or a collection of household items such as paper towel tubes, string, toothpicks, etc.  Students then must write out the instructions for how to build the structure. Students will swap sets of instructions and attempt to build the structures of other students.

Students quickly realize how clearly and precisely instructions must be written.

This activity can be used with students in grades 3 through 12. By changing up the “building materials” that are used the activity is easily adaptable to students of different grade levels and ability levels.

Enjoy!
