Why do I have students play a game with integers when it’s not in Common Core for their grade level? Two reasons: because they can, and because they think they are cool for doing higher level math.
Gomoku is a dice game where students try to get five in a row on a game board like the one shown below. In this version, they roll two dice and subtract either the larger from the smaller or the smaller from the larger. I use a number line to teach them negative numbers. They usually get it with no problems.
