Choosing Good Fit Books!

3-5· All Freebies· PK-2

Helping your students choose a good fit book for reading is an ongoing process throughout the school year.  Goldi Socks and The Three Libearians by Jacki Mims Hopkins is the perfect mentor text to get your students started choosing their own Good Fit Books!  If you use Daily 5, they use I PICK good fit books.  This bookmark uses bits of that, and the 5 finger method for choosing a good fit book.  In Goldi Socks, she uses the 5 finger rule to choose a “Just Right” book for her. I created bookmarks to help the kiddos remember how to choose a “Goldi Socks”, or Just Right book!

Why teach Good Fit Books?

I believe that children need to choose their own reading material!  With that said, I don’ t want them spending too much time reading books that are too hard for them (they get frustrated) or too easy for them (they aren’t learning anything).  Choosing a good fit book ensures that the kiddos are reading something that they will enjoy, at a level that still affords them some leeway for learning to use their reading strategies!  In the Goldi Socks book, Goldi finds the house in the woods and can’t resist the books.  She uses the 5 finger rule to discover a book that is “just right” for her to read!

Helping Students Choose their own books!

In order to help your students master choosing Good Fit books for themselves, this lesson will need to be reinforced regularly!  I also do lots of individual reading conferences with students in order to help them choose books! This bookmark is a visual reminder of how kiddos can choose their own Good Fit books!  You can download your freebie bookmark HERE!
