Subitizing is the skill of instantly recognizing a quantity without having to count each object. The skill of subitizing aids in students’ number sense development. Subitizing activities are perfect warm-ups for whole or small group work. Flashing cards to the group fires-up their brains and prepares the students for upcoming activities and work.
Directing and developing the students conversation and answering skills benefits their math vocabulary. While using the cards during math workshop time, encourage students to say something like, “I know this is 9 because I see a group of 5 and a group of 4.” Or “This is 6 because two groups of 3 equal 6.”
Pineapple subitizing cards are perfect for the start of the school year. The fresh look of funky pineapples will capture the students attention. I work on subitizing the entire year with my students. To keep the activity fresh for each season I like to change the types of cards I use. I do have a set of subitizing dot cards without pictures, frankly the cards serve the purpose but I like the added cuteness of a fun, colorful picture!
