Happy New Year, teaching friends! Are you a fan of making resolutions? To be honest, I don’t tend to do so well keeping most of them. But with this activity, your students will be making words with resolution, something they can all “keep”!
If you’ve already used making words activities with your students, you already know how powerful they can be for practicing skills with decoding, blending and segmenting, word families, spelling, onset-rime substitution, and even vocabulary! {{You can find more free making words activities here and here!}}
If you haven’t tried using making words, here’s how it works! Your students cut apart the letters r-e-s-o-l-u-t-i-o-n, rearrange them, and create words. Then they’ll write the words on a recording page, listing them according to the number of letters in the word.
This New Years making words set is easy to prepare (just one page to copy for each student!) and also easy to differentiate! You’ll find two pages in this download:
Level 1: Students are given the page with the target word (resolution) and the letter cards.
Level 2: Students are given the same recording page and letter cards, but have the added challenge of using all of the letters to discover the target word on their own.
How can you use this activity in your classroom?
Well, the most straightforward way is to simply give each of your students a copy of the page and proceed as I described above!
But how about trying Team Races?
Students work in pairs or small groups and race the clock to write lists of word. Then read the lists aloud one at a time and cross out any word that’s duplicated on the list of another team. The team with the most unique words left after all lists have been read is the winner – sort of like Boggle!
