Reading strategies are very helpful for beginning readers. They give them tools to use when figuring out words. These bookmarks use animal characters and names that relate to the strategies they represent.
How Do Reading Strategies Help?
Many children who are learning to read try to sound out each letter. This may help them to figure out a word, but in the meantime, the comprehension can be lost. Imagine sounding out each letter of each word. Not very efficient is it.
These strategies make reading more effective and comprehension more likely.
French version available
When I was helping with small groups in my grandson’s grade 1/2 class, I discovered that children were struggling with reading. I knew that reading strategies worked, so I created a French version. The animals and concepts are the same, but the names are different.
This concept was a bit different from what was being used in the school, but when the teacher saw it in action, she started using it herself. The children began to make connections with the names and they used them in their reading practice.
