Alphabet Picture Card and Work Mat

All Freebies· PK-2

I have found so many uses for this picture card/work mat!  It would be great for Kinders learning their ABC’s and letter sounds.  I used it as an RTI tool

for some first graders who didn’t have all their letters and sounds yet.

Some ideas we enjoyed:

—match magnet letters to each letter on the work mat, say the letter, make the sound.

—show a letter card and student points to corresponding letter on work mat, say the

   letter, make the sound

—flip a disc, coin, button…. onto the mat and say the letter it lands on.

—with a partner, play “I Spy” using the mat

    (“I spy an animal that runs fast”……”Horse, H, /h/”)

—provide picture cards showing different pictures than those on the mat (this product

will be coming soon), name the picture, make the beginning sound, find the

corresponding letter on the work mat.

—use the alphabet picture card as a tool when writing.  Sounding out words is easier when you can find a

Corresponding picture that also shows the letter.  (if I want to write the work basketball,  I make the

/b/ sound and immediately think “balloon” because of my previous practice with the mat and I find

the picture of the balloon and see how to form the letter b)
