Do your kiddos love seasonal October themes like spiders, bats, and pumpkins? π¦
Are you looking for a fun pumpkin activity that’s not focused on Halloween? Look no further. This FREE pumpkin prediction activity is fun and engaging!
This activity doesn’t involve jack-o-lanterns, ghosts, or trick-or-treating, so everyone can participate. It’s appropriate for kids who celebrate Halloween and kids who don’t!
With that in mind, check out the free activity below. π
How To Use The Free Pumpkin Prediction Activity:
This pumpkin prediction activity is a great way to incorporate some seasonal fun. If your students celebrate Halloween, it pairs well with Halloween read-alouds. If your students don’t celebrate Halloween, pair it with a book about pumpkin life cycles or pumpkin patches. Either way, it’s a fun seasonal activity that incorporates counting and measuring.
Supplies:
You’ll need to split your class into groups for this activity. Each group will get a pumpkin sealed inside a brown paper bag. Include different varieties of small pumpkins if you can. Each kid will also need a pumpkin predictions worksheet. You’ll also need a scale, measuring tape, and a tub of water, but these can be shared between groups if needed.
The teacher will also need a knife to cut the pumpkins open. (Keep safety, student age, and school policies in mind here. You may need to cut the pumpkins after school or during your planning period to make sure students do not have access to the knife.)
Activity Directions:
Each group will explore their pumpkin, keeping it in the bag. They’ll try to predict the color, texture, circumference, and weight of their pumpkin. They’ll also predict whether it will float and guess how many seeds it will have.
Once they’ve made their predictions, they’ll remove the pumpkin from the bag and observe its color and texture. Then, they’ll weigh and measure it. Finally, they’ll test its ability to float and count the number of seeds it has.
