Teaching Theoretical Probability with Dice in the Elementary Classroom
Let’s face it—theoretical probability isn’t exactly the lesson students wake up excited about. But what if it could be? What if, instead of blank stares and wild guesses, you heard gasps, laughter, and the occasional, “Wait… really?!” That’s exactly what happened when I introduced theoretical probability with dice to my class.
Picture this: We’re just getting started when one student declares that rolling a six is guaranteed if you “just wish hard enough.” (I mean… adorable. But no.)
This is where the fun begins. No dice rolling, no luck—just some smart thinking, all possible outcomes, and a bit of mathematical magic. And trust me, it’s way cooler than it sounds.
With a few visual aids, some hands-on movement, and questions that get kids thinking, we turned a tricky concept into a full-on math adventure. 🧠🎲

What Is Theoretical Probability?
In simple terms, theoretical probability is the likelihood of something happening based on all the possible outcomes—not what actually happens when you try it.
For example, the probability of rolling a 3 on a standard six-sided die is 1 out of 6. That’s because there are six sides and only one of them is a 3. Easy enough, right?
But here’s where it gets tricky for students: they think it’s just as likely to roll a 3 three times in a row as it is to roll a 6, 2, and 5. They don’t always see how math patterns work until they actually lay them all out and analyze them.
That’s why using a visual chart of all the possible outcomes when rolling two dice is a total game-changer. (More on that in a minute!)

What Worked in My Classroom: Teaching Theoretical Probability with Dice
When I introduced the topic, we started by predicting outcomes together. “What’s the chance of rolling a double six?” I asked. One student said, “High! It happens all the time when I play Monopoly!”
This is when we turned to a reference chart listing all 36 possible combinations of rolling two six-sided dice. We worked together to find out how many of those outcomes were double sixes. Spoiler: only one.
That little exercise opened up so much discussion!
To keep the momentum going, I scattered theoretical probability task cards around the classroom. Each card had a different scenario based on rolling one or two dice. Students used recording sheets to note down their answers and justify their reasoning.
We didn’t roll any dice—this was about predicting outcomes using logic, not experimenting with chance. That’s the heart of theoretical probability.

What Didn’t Work (And How We Fixed It)
At first, a few students just guessed answers. “It’s probably 50/50,” they’d say, which is the universal response when we don’t know. So I encouraged them to refer back to the possible outcomes chart.
Once they had a visual, everything changed. They started explaining their answers using fractions and really thinking about likelihood.
Another thing: not everyone was moving at the same pace. So I gave students the option to work alone, in pairs, or in small groups. This gave my high-flyers room to stretch and my unsure students a chance to talk things through.
Practical Tips for Teaching Theoretical Probability with Dice
1. Use a reference chart
Before any problem-solving begins, walk your students through all 36 combinations of rolling two dice. Let them color-code, tally, or highlight patterns. This helps them visualize probability.
2. Make it active
Even without rolling dice, students can move around. Tape task cards around the classroom. Let them grab clipboards and go on a “math hunt.” It turns math into a mission, and they love it.
3. Think aloud
Model your thought process out loud: “There are six sides on each die, so that’s 6 x 6 = 36 combinations. If I want to find the probability of getting a sum of 8, how many combinations equal 8?” This verbal unpacking helps students internalize the steps.
4. Group discussions
After completing the task cards, bring the class together to review. Project the answer key, and ask students to explain their answers. You’ll hear gems like, “I thought it was 1 in 12, but then I saw there were actually five combinations that make 8.” Lightbulb moments everywhere!
