In this free activity, students track random acts of kindness (or the lack of) for a week and write about their findings. Many are surprised at the amount of acts they see when they are looking for them; but I’ve also had students observe many opportunities for people to do something kind for another person, and they don’t. It really makes for an interesting paper, allowing the students to be introspective about their own behavior.
Even though it is a paired activity with the novel Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins, it can be adapted to other novels or used as a stand-alone assignment.
