What’s so special about having your students solve these multi-step math riddles?  There are a few factors that make riddles an ideal choice!

  • Solving riddles requires your students to use lots of math vocabulary and skills , making riddles an easy way to incorporate daily spiral math review.
  • Solving riddles requires critical thinking and logic! We’re always looking for ways to build more higher order thinking skills into the day, right?
  • Solving math riddles builds number sense and mental math skills.
  • Riddles are the BEST when it comes to engagement!  Seriously, even your most reluctant math students will hardly realize that they’re doing work, and will beg to do more of these!

 

How can you incorporate these math riddles for hundreds and thousands into your math curriculum?

  • They’re great for those random moments when you want to keep your students engaged and learning! A sponge activity between lessons, those five minutes before lunch when there’s no time to start something new, etc.
  •  Use riddles as a math rotation or math center activity.
  •  A riddle a day makes spiral review of math vocabulary, concepts, and processes a snap!
  •  Riddles are an easy-prep bell ringer activity! Put a riddle up on your interactive board for students to solve as they enter your classroom. 
  • Use a place value riddle as the basis for a daily number talk. You won’t be struggling to come up with a new idea for each day any more!
  • Focus your students’ attention at the beginning of your math lesson by solving a riddle together.
  • Tutors and parent volunteers love keeping a set of riddle cards on hand. They’re such an easy way to fill extra moments at the end of a tutoring session.
