Math Practice with Math Mysteries

3-5· PK-2

Are you ready for a little fun for your students? I’m always up for some fun. Math Mysteries are a fun way for kids to practice math skills and do a little reading as well. They are able to practice math standards in a ‘story problem’ type format. The mysteries are set up in a ‘choose your own adventure’ type of theme.
There are a couple of different ways I’ve used math mysteries in my room.

  1. I print out a copy or two in color and put the pages in plastic page protectors and then place them in a 3-ring binder. Then, the kids can use a dry erase marker to work out the problems. You can see how I did this in this video.
  2. Or, I print out the sheets that have 4 pages to a sheet and make individual booklets for each child.
  3. Or, I print the books in color and spiral bound them so I have enough for 1/2 the class. Then, the kids buddy up to solve the mystery.

There are several grade levels of math mysteries. When I have kids working on different levels, I print out different grade booklets but put the same cover on the front for all of them. The stories are the same but the problems are based on the grade-level standards.

I hope your students enjoy math mysteries as much as mine do. Have a happy Thanksgiving!
Thanks for stopping by!
