Post Learning Goals Daily

In the crazy world of education, there’s a tried-and-tested method that enhances the overall learning experience of all students. It’s simple, but its impact is impressive. What is this magical strategy? It’s the practice of posting learning goals in the classroom. Yet, as simple as it might seem, it holds a multitude of benefits for learners of all ages.

Since we are right here at the Back to School season, this is a perfect time to implement posting learning goals into your classroom strategies.

First things first, let’s establish what we mean by ‘learning goals’. These are the desired outcomes that teachers want their students to achieve by the end of a lesson. They could be as simple as “By the end of this lesson, students will be able to XYZ.” The power of sharing these goals with students lies in the clarity it creates and the motivation and purpose it provides.

Using I Will Statements in the Classroom

I personally like to use “I will” statements. For example, “Today I will identify the topic and explain the main idea.”

So why should you, as a teacher, post your learning goals? Here’s why.

Why should I post daily learning goals?

1. **Improves Focus:** When your students understand the intended learning outcomes, it helps them zero in on what’s important. This minimizes distractions and maximizes absorption of the critical teaching points. It’s like giving them a roadmap to their learning journey.

2. **Boosts Motivation and Engagement:** Knowing what they are working towards, young learners are more likely to feel motivated and engaged in the classroom. Having a clear, defined target can spark their competitive spirit and encourage them to challenge themselves to reach it. It’s like dangling a carrot before them; they see the reward and aim to grab it!

3. **Fosters Independence:** By outlining the learning goals, you also progressively foster their sense of independence. Students become more proactive in their learning process, understanding what they need to achieve and trying to accomplish it. This sense of ownership, in turn, builds confidence and self-reliance.

4. **Facilitates Self-Assessment:** Pre-defined learning goals provide students with a benchmark against which they can assess their own understanding and progress. This self-assessment helps them identify areas where they might be struggling, thus paving the way for timely intervention and asking for help when needed.

5. **Promotes a Growth Mindset:** Posting learning goals helps students appreciate learning as a process. It emphasizes progress over perfection. Young learners come to understand that getting to the goal is an incremental journey, which feeds into the development of a growth mindset – the belief that abilities and intelligence can be developed through dedication, hard work, and most importantly, the courage to embrace challenges.
