scientific writing activity.

All teachers know that the trend in education is writing, writing, writing….in every subject area. Scientific writing is very different than other types of writing.  Writing in science must be very detailed, factual, and orderly.

A great way to start is by having your students learn to write a laboratory procedure. A lab procedure is a step by step list of instructions that leads the learner to the desired outcome.

This activity is a fun introduction to writing in the laboratory.  It is not a “one and you’re done” type of activity.  You can use this over and over throughout the year.  It is fun to save the students work from their first attempt and show it to them again at the end of year so that their progress in effective writing is evident.

Students are given “building materials” and asked to write a list of instructions
on how to build the structure.  Students swap instructions and try to recreate
what their classmates have done.

Enjoy!
